Khartoum University students listen to a lecture about first human in space

The expiring April is marked by a significant day in history – International Day of Human Space Flight. On 12 April 1961 first human, Russian Yuri Gagarin, travelled into space. This day the Vostok 3KA-3 (Vostok 1), a spacecraft constructed by Soviet rocket engineer and spacecraft designer, was launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome. It is hard to overestimate the significance of this happening. It is the beginning of the Space Age in human history. Gagarin's flight was a triumph for the Soviet space program.

This was the topic of the lection delivered by Russian diplomat in Sudan Sergey Konyashin the Pushkin classroom of Russian language (named in the honor of Alexander Pushkin – a great Russian poet and writer of the XIX century) at the Khartoum University for students studying Russian. The report of Sergey Konyashin is part of the lecture series dedicated to Russian history and traditions at the Pushkin classroom.

During his discourse Sergey Konyashin spoke about the first cosmonaut’s biography, his life and education, his career. In his speech the diplomat paid attention to the preparation for the flight, the construction of the spacecraft, the criteria of the selection of cosmonauts, the difficulties the first cosmonaut faced, his impressions of the flight.

The lecture was tracked by students very attentively, they were really absorbed listening. Students asked many questions and are very enthusiastic waiting forward to the next lectures devoted to the 70th anniversary of the Soviet Victory in the Great Patriotic War (May 9) and Russian great writer Alexander Pushkin (June 6).
